SUMMARY:Millennium Stage presents: Raíces Negras
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Raíces Negras chamber music collective celebrate innovative and prominent American women composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Each work explores an element of nature and the spirits that dwell within\, ranging from the Negro spirituals in Undine Smith Moore’s “Afro-American Suite\,” the motions and gestures of the beach in Tania León’s “Sands of Time\,” a day in the life of the Papua New Guinean rainforest in Elisenda Fábregas’s “Voices of the Rainforest\,” or the avant-garde timbral illusions and mythical imagery of Clarice Assad’s world-premiere commission entitled “Flight of the Fairies.” Within these musical works\, audiences will discover and enjoy the worldly and otherworldly soundscapes these composers can elicit. Featuring flutist Ceylon Mitchell\, cellist Erin Murphy Snedecor\, and pianist Elizabeth G. Hill.

SUMMARY:Atlas Intersections presents: Our Hospitality
DESCRIPTION:Come see Buster Keaton’s first masterpiece\, the hilarious story of a Romeo who meets his Juliet only to discover a family feud and future in-laws who want him dead. A satirical take on the historic Hatfield-McCoy feud\, the film combines high drama\, thrilling adventure\, and Keaton’s stone-faced slapstick; Leonard Maltin calls it a “sublime silent comedy\, one of Buster’s best\, with a genuinely hair-raising finale.” \nThis special screening of the silent film Our Hospitality features the new bluegrass-inspired instrumental score by composer Andrew Earle Simpson\, performed live by the Andrew Simpson Ensemble\, a chamber group with a varied roster of professional instrumentalists that premieres and performs new scores for silent film.

SUMMARY:with National Philharmonic: Dvořák Symphony No. 7
DESCRIPTION:National Philharmonic joins forces with dynamic guest conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson for Valerie Coleman’s Phenomenal Women and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. Phenomenal Women draws inspiration from Maya Angelou’s poem and book of the same name\, and celebrates five phenomenal women—Angelou\, mathematician Katherine Johnson\, tennis great Serena Williams\, Olympic boxer Claressa Shields\, and former first lady Michelle Obama—telling each of their stories through jazz\, classical\, and traditional music styles. Coleman\, a Grammy-nominated flutist and founder of Imani Winds\, will play with a wind quintet assembled for the performance.  \nHailed as one of Dvořák’s most significant works\, Symphony No. 7 is a musical journey of epic proportions. From the majestic first movement to the triumphant climax of the finale\, Dvořák weaves rich harmonies\, playful rhythms\, and elements of Czech folk music throughout. Brought to life under the baton of Jeri Lynne Johnson\, conductor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Stride” as part of the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors and founder of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra\, this program is not to be missed.  \nTickets available here. All Kids. All Free. All the Time.

SUMMARY:History Film Forum presents: Our Hospitality
DESCRIPTION:The History Film Forum presents Our Hospitality (1923) as it turns 100 years old. \nCome see Buster Keaton’s first masterpiece\, the hilarious story of a Romeo who meets his Juliet only to discover a family feud and future in-laws who want him dead. A satirical take on the historic Hatfield-McCoy feud\, the film combines high drama\, thrilling adventure\, and Keaton’s stone-faced slapstick; Leonard Maltin calls it a “sublime silent comedy\, one of Buster’s best\, with a genuinely hair-raising finale.” \nThis special screening of the silent film Our Hospitality features the premiere of a new score by composer Andrew Earle Simpson\, performed live by the Andrew Simpson Ensemble.

SUMMARY:with National Philharmonic: Universal Longings
DESCRIPTION:National Philharmonic and The Washington Chorus join forces for a concert of universal proportions conducted by TWC Artistic Director Eugene Rogers\, including the Washington-area premiere of composer James Lee III’s Breaths of Universal Longings. “He’s a composer who has what it takes\,” says the Baltimore Sun\, and his works have been commissioned\, premiered\, and performed by prominent symphonies throughout the country.  \nVenezuelan composer Antonio Estévez’s Cantata Criolla retells the legend of Faust’s deal with the Devil\, set to text from the mythic poem Florentino y El Diablo by Alberto Avelo Torrealbas. As Florentino battles for his soul in a singing contest against El Diablo\, his story evolves through the rich textures of Estévez’s music. Spoiler alert: our hero prevails.  \nTickets available here. All Kids. All Free. All the Time.
