SUMMARY:with National Philharmonic: Dvořák Symphony No. 7
DESCRIPTION:National Philharmonic joins forces with dynamic guest conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson for Valerie Coleman’s Phenomenal Women and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. Phenomenal Women draws inspiration from Maya Angelou’s poem and book of the same name\, and celebrates five phenomenal women—Angelou\, mathematician Katherine Johnson\, tennis great Serena Williams\, Olympic boxer Claressa Shields\, and former first lady Michelle Obama—telling each of their stories through jazz\, classical\, and traditional music styles. Coleman\, a Grammy-nominated flutist and founder of Imani Winds\, will play with a wind quintet assembled for the performance.  \nHailed as one of Dvořák’s most significant works\, Symphony No. 7 is a musical journey of epic proportions. From the majestic first movement to the triumphant climax of the finale\, Dvořák weaves rich harmonies\, playful rhythms\, and elements of Czech folk music throughout. Brought to life under the baton of Jeri Lynne Johnson\, conductor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Stride” as part of the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors and founder of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra\, this program is not to be missed.  \nTickets available here. SUMMARY:World Premiere: Waking the Witch by Ashi Day
DESCRIPTION:Waking the Witch is a one-act immersive chamber opera\, composed by Ashi Day\, for solo countertenor and Pierrot ensemble. The opera explores human vulnerability to absurd beliefs and the danger that ensues when authority figures display black-and-white thinking\, fear of those with less power\, and susceptibility to conspiracy theories. The audience is placed in the middle of the action as the accused witch\, physically surrounded with a single-minded interrogator and animal familiars of questionable reality (played by the treble instruments). Using text derived from both historical witchfinders and modern-day statesmen with eerily similar messaging\, listeners are tossed between the wild ride of a spooky story\, the frustration of navigating the impossible logic of power mixed with bizarre moral panic\, and the dangerous reality that these things did\, and in many ways still do\, happen. \nWNO Studios\n3rd Floor\n6925 Willlow St. NW\nWashington\, DC 20012 \nPerformances on: Friday\, Dec. 9\, 2022 at 7pm and Saturday\, Dec. 10\, 2022 at 7pm \nRSVP for tickets here! \n  \nDEVELOPMENT TEAM \nAshi Day\, composer and librettist\nMin Sang Kim\, countertenor\nLee Cromwell\, workshop director and script consultant\nBalance Campaign\, Pierrot ensemble\, workshop performers\, and music consultants \nThe development of Waking the Witch received funding from OPERA America’s Opera Grants for Women Composers: Discovery Grants program\, supported by the Virginia B.
