SUMMARY:World Premiere: Waking the Witch by Ashi Day
DESCRIPTION:Waking the Witch is a one-act immersive chamber opera\, composed by Ashi Day\, for solo countertenor and Pierrot ensemble. The opera explores human vulnerability to absurd beliefs and the danger that ensues when authority figures display black-and-white thinking\, fear of those with less power\, and susceptibility to conspiracy theories. The audience is placed in the middle of the action as the accused witch\, physically surrounded with a single-minded interrogator and animal familiars of questionable reality (played by the treble instruments). Using text derived from both historical witchfinders and modern-day statesmen with eerily similar messaging\, listeners are tossed between the wild ride of a spooky story\, the frustration of navigating the impossible logic of power mixed with bizarre moral panic\, and the dangerous reality that these things did\, and in many ways still do\, happen. \nWNO Studios\n3rd Floor\n6925 Willlow St. NW\nWashington\, DC 20012 \nPerformances on: Friday\, Dec. 9\, 2022 at 7pm and Saturday\, Dec. 10\, 2022 at 7pm \nRSVP for tickets here! \n  \nDEVELOPMENT TEAM \nAshi Day\, composer and librettist\nMin Sang Kim\, countertenor\nLee Cromwell\, workshop director and script consultant\nBalance Campaign\, Pierrot ensemble\, workshop performers\, and music consultants \nThe development of Waking the Witch received funding from OPERA America’s Opera Grants for Women Composers: Discovery Grants program\, supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.

SUMMARY:Music that Inspires
DESCRIPTION:National Philharmonic – Chamber Series \nfeaturing: Laura Colgate\, violin\, Elizabeth Hill\, piano\, Willie Clark\, tuba\, & Cheryl Hill\, clarinet \nworks by: Robert Schumann\, Camille Saint-Saëns\, Barbara York\, and Florence Price \nWhat is art\, and how does it come into being? How is all art connected\, and what does it have to do with being intrinsically human? In this concert\, the compositions speak to the interconnectedness of visual and aural art\, and how the two often combine to create something more than the sum of their parts. Composer Barbara York finds inspiration from the paintings of Grant Wood. Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre takes its origin from illustrated sermon texts. It is hoped that this performance will lead audience members to new acts of artistry\, whatever form that may take\, because there is art in everything. SUMMARY:Music that Feeds the Soul

It has the power to speak straight to our innermost beings\, often healing what nothing else can. As William Congreve said\, “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast.” Feeling savage? Let these gorgeous\, inspiring compositions soothe you\, and create the calm and comfort or inner warmth of spirit we all need to get us through the day. This streamed concert will be viewable online at: https://nationalphilharmonic.org

In particular\, Caroline Shaw’s Plan and Elevation: The Grounds of Dumbarton Oaks asks the audience to gather in celebration of the treasured DC gardens and consider the landscapes that bring beauty to their own lives.
