SUMMARY:Great Noise Ensemble presents: Freedom from Fear
DESCRIPTION:Great Noise Ensemble concludes the 2018-19 season of its residency at Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ with the final program in a series called the Four Freedoms\, based on Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “Four Essential Freedoms\,” articulated in his 1941 State of the Union speech supporting our allies in Europe ahead of World War II. This program is commenting on the freedom from fear. \nFreedom from Fear is possibly the most basic desire we have as humans: survival. Each of the works in this program addresses fear from various perspectives. In Be Just!\, Martin Bresnick speaks to the fear of injustice and the realization that\, perhaps\, we have not been the good people we always thought we were. Dana Kaufman’s Peaporutus (“Concussion”) is a more personal story of fear: fear of direct violence to the composer herself\, who was randomly attacked in a foreign country one summer evening\, and was left concussed and alone\, needing to get herself to a hospital in a strange land. Nebal Maysaud’s Electronic Battleship and Armando Bayolo’s Last Breaths deal with institutionalized state violence\, either through warfare\, or the institutional racism inherent in police brutality. Last Breaths is a powerful setting of the final words of black men murdered because of their “otherness” and the suspicion that arose in their white (or white-identifying) attackers. \nIn Alex Temple’s Switch\, we have perhaps the most unique piece in our entire season\, not just this program. In 2013\, Temple and engineer Sylvia Wald invented a device that could “capture audio signals from parallel universes.” Before the machine overheated and was destroyed\, along with its schematics\, Temple and Wald managed to listen to audio from a culture in a universe where people are forced into strict social roles according to whether they’re right- or left-handed. This audio told the story of a dissident group\, The Free Zone\, which saw its Utopian dream destroyed by a violent\, right-wing dictatorship. We are lucky to have Alex Temple’s transcription—from memory!—of this historic broadcast as a cautionary tale of arbitrary injustice. \nThe program\, and the season\, wraps up with Julius Eastman’s Stay on It. Stay on It is as joyful a work as Eastman (who faced incredible hardship and poverty due to his unwillingness to conform to societal expectations) ever wrote. Like the best of Eastman’s music\, however\, it is still uncompromising in challenging us to do better\, to be better\, and to defeat the darkness that nearly consumes us on a daily basis. \nThis performance will feature Meaghan Burke\, vocalist for the Temple\, and Andrew Sauvageau\, baritone for the Bayolo. SUMMARY:UMBC Presents: Balance Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Balance Campaign is a Washington D.C.-based contemporary ensemble passionate about commissioning and premiering new works. Currently in their second season\, the group has been in residence at the University of Maryland – Baltimore County and is currently ensemble-in-residence with the District New Music Coalition (DNMC). \n  \nThe program features works by women composers\, and will also feature the premiere works of two student composers\, Collin David and Logan Perkins\, on this program. \n\nMirage – Shulamit Ran\nVariance – Collin David\nThree Episodes for Six Instruments – Logan Perkins\nLonely Lake – Margaret Brouwer\nwissahickon poeTrees – Jennifer Higdon\n\nAdmission is free. \nPlan your visit\nUMBC is located about 10 minutes south of the Inner Harbor along I-95. SUMMARY:Great Noise Ensemble presents: Freedom to Worship
DESCRIPTION:The Four Freedoms Project II: Freedom to Worship\n\nGNE continues its residency at Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ with the second of four programs called The Four Freedoms Project\, named after Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “Four Essential Freedoms\,” articulated during his 1941 State of the Union address in support of our allies in Europe ahead of World War II. \nFreedom to Worship is perhaps the most meditative program of our season. In this program we present various reactions to the meaning of “worship.” From Sofia Gubaidulina’s haunting reflection of silence in Silenzio to David Lang’s How to Pray\, a more frantic work more indicative of its contemporary American milieu\, each work in this program seeks to explore a sense of what contemplation and worship might mean for a contemporary culture. These find expression in the other two works on this program\, Peri Mauer’s Afterwords\, a simple and brief elegy for lost loved ones\, and Armando Bayolo’s triptych Hymnodies for the Contemplation of Terrifying Mysteries\, which seeks to create a meditative space in sound that envelops the audience\, within the context of the challenging times in which it was written. Blair Skinner will be conducting this program. \nTickets are available through OvationTix : $30 General Admission presale\, $24 WCUCC Members / Students/Seniors & Military at the door.

SUMMARY:Great Noise Ensemble presents: Freedom of Expression
DESCRIPTION:On December 15\, 2018 at 8:00 p.m.\, Great Noise Ensemble will present the first of a series of programs called The Four Freedoms Project at Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ. \nFreedom of Expression includes two large works. Joshua Armenta has sets texts by Federico García Lorca in Sonetos del amor oscuro\, for tenor and ensemble. In this world premiere\, Armenta is commenting on the struggles of the LGBTQ community\, both in early twentieth-century Spain\, where Lorca was killed because of his sexual orientation\, and the present day. \nFrederic Rzewski’s Coming Together/Attica is a classic of political expression through music. A setting of letters from Sam Melville\, who was killed in 1971 during an uprising at Attica prison in upstate New York\, Coming Together/Attica is a testament to the failures of a state to keep control of its population by force. This work was arranged by GNE Artistic Director Armando Bayolo. \nThis concert will feature Blair Skinner\, conductor\, Josh Diaz\, tenor\, and Andrew Sauvageau as narrator for the Rzewski. \nTickets are available through OvationTix : $30 General Admission presale\, $24 WCUCC Members /Students/Seniors & Military at the door.
