DESCRIPTION:The Colour of Music Festival (COMF) announces the ninth annual Colour of Music Festival February 2-5\, 2022 at historic Charleston locations showcasing leading black classical artists from the U.S.\, France\, and Colombia South America. The 2022 series builds on the expansion of the Festival’s chamber music and brings back its original ‘Virtuosi’ co-ed moniker begun in 2014. The slate of stellar artists will perform compositions ranging from baroque to modern\, including works by several noted black female composers―Florence B. Price\, Margaret Bonds\, Valerie Coleman\, and Jessy Montgomery. \nElizabeth G. Hill will be a featured guest artist in solo and chamber performances on Wednesday\, Feb. 2\, 2022. SUMMARY:The Souls of Black Folk: Rediscovering Black Classical Music
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresented by PostClassical Ensemble in partnership with Howard University and the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts \nPCE explores the roots of Black classical music\, from the sorrow songs that speak to the suffering of enslaved Africans in the United States to the spiritual arrangements of composer Harry Burleigh and the musical prophecies of Antonin Dvorak. \nWith music by Burleigh\, Florence Price and Margaret Bonds\, and readings from W. E. B. Du Bois and Langston Hughes\, we look back at the founders of Black classical music\, recall their words\, and experiences and examine the times in which they lived. \n‍This concert is the first of three in PCE’s season-long project\, The Rediscovery and Renewal of Black Classical Music\, which seeks to elevate consequential composers who have too long been neglected for all their profound contributions to American orchestral music. PCE has long been a national leader in unearthing this buried history.
